Independence Day

lay down on the mother
earth grass cool, pressing
against a lavender-scented sheet.
repeat, repeat clouds float
on a universe blue,
feel wind blow overhead
leaves talk breezy words
apple falls from the sky.

cat walks, meow,
and lays down as usual
through closed eyelids see sunlight
flicker, and unusual—rockets pop
smell of sulfur matches and
gunpowder dissipates.
chicken grill smoke, then peace
sweet peace, on this 4th of July.
